For nearly four decades, Grant Oskvig has been a cornerstone in the dirt track racing industry. Starting at just 9 years old, Grant’s first job was running the scoreboard, a role he took on while tagging along with his dad to the track. “They found a job for me, too,” he recalls fondly. From that moment, his love for the sport and its community was cemented, shaping a career that has spanned 38 years and counting.
When it comes to racing, there’s few organizations that hold as much significance for Grant, as the International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) does. “What I love about IMCA is the efforts they make to keep costs down as much as they can,” he explains. IMCA’s dedication to affordability and accessibility resonates deeply with him. “They have classes where you can go race anywhere in any state and know you have an opportunity to be competitive,” he adds, highlighting the association’s focus on creating an even playing field for racers.
Grant’s career has taken him to tracks across the U.S. and even into Canada. “It all depends on the year, but I’ve worked in 10 states and Canada,” he notes. Despite the variety of venues and events, his love for dirt track racing remains constant.
The IMCA.TV Winter Nationals is a special place for Grant. Now in his fourth consecutive year contributing to the event, he treasures the relationships it fosters. “If I had to choose one favorite thing about Winter Nationals, it would always be the people,” he says. To Grant, the camaraderie among racers, fans, and event organizers is the heartbeat of every successful show.
Grant’s passion for his work stems from being part of something greater. “What I love most about my job is being a small part of shows that run smooth and consistent,” he shares. His commitment to excellence and his attention to detail make him an invaluable contributor to every event he participates in.
When asked about IMCA President Brett Root, Grant doesn’t hesitate to sing his praises. “Brett is one of my favorite people,” he says. “I would never want his job, but he is an incredible person and very patient.” It’s clear that mutual respect fuels the relationship between these two key figures in the racing world.
Grant doesn’t single out a specific track or event he dreams of attending. Instead, he values the opportunity to be a part of any IMCA show. “Any IMCA show is what I want to be a part of and look forward to,” he says. His gratitude also extends to Brad Whitfield, to whom he would say, “Thank you for letting me be a part of this great event! And just one more!”
For young individuals aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Grant offers sage advice. “Go learn as much as you can, travel to other tracks, and find something you like and can use at the track you work at,” he advises. But above all, he emphasizes the importance of enjoying the journey. “Have fun and enjoy the people you meet. Be fair and consistent as much as you can.”
From a young scoreboard operator to a respected figure in dirt track racing, Grant Oskvig’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and community. His dedication to the sport and the people within it serves as an inspiration to anyone lucky enough to cross paths with him. As he continues his journey, there’s no doubt that Grant will remain a vital part of the dirt track racing family for years to come.
