Jason Phillips: The Unsung Hero of Arizona Dirt Track Push Truck and Safety Teams

For nearly 12 years, Jason Phillips has been a vital part of the Arizona dirt track racing community as a push truck driver and safety crew member. His journey into the role was inspired by his wife, who grew up immersed in the world of sprint car racing at Ascot Park. When the World of Outlaws came to Arizona Speedway and announced they needed help on the safety crew, her encouragement led Jason to volunteer, and he’s never looked back.

Jason’s favorite cars to push-start are USAC midgets. “The way the exhaust points toward the windshield and the loud pop they make, it’s thrilling,” he says with a grin. Over the years, he’s come to cherish the thrill of being in the infield, which he calls “the best seats in the house.”

One of the most rewarding aspects of his role is the bond with drivers. “We’re there for their best and worst days,” he shares. “The respect we get for what we do makes it all worthwhile.” Responding to crashes and incidents is a challenging part of the job, requiring composure and confidence. “You have to remind yourself you’ve done your best and not let it get to you,” Jason says.

When asked how to inspire others, Jason’s advice is simple: “If you love racing and are up for a challenge, come ride with us one night. You’ll be hooked.”

Jason Phillips embodies the heart and dedication of dirt track racing. For 12 years, he’s been the quiet hero in the infield, ensuring the action goes on safely. For Jason, it’s not just a role, it’s a passion.
