For nearly a decade, Mike Holland has been the voice of excitement at race tracks across the region. His passion, enthusiasm, and unforgettable catchphrases have made him a beloved announcer in the racing community. But how did Mike find himself behind the mic, and what drives his love for the sport? Let’s dive into the story of “Mike on the Mic.”
Mike’s announcing career began in March of 2016, thanks to an unexpected opportunity. An announcer preparing for retirement asked Mike to step in and help out. Before long, the microphone was his, and a career was born.
“It just kind of happened,” Mike recalls. “The last nine years have been an incredible ride. Watching the sport evolve and being part of it has been a dream.”
Ask Mike about his favorite event, and you won’t get a specific race or date. For him, it’s all about the energy of the crowd and the heart-pounding action on the track.
“If the car count is good and the stands are packed, that’s the event,” Mike says. “But if I had to choose, it’s the first-time winners. Seeing their emotions and knowing all their hard work has finally paid off; that’s the money interview. It’s never scripted and always unforgettable.”
Mike is known for his signature catchphrase, “On the gas, haulin’ ass.” It’s a phrase that’s become synonymous with the start of main events. “There are announcers who have their own sayings, and I wanted something memorable,” Mike explains. “One night, I just blurted it out. Brad Whitfield looked at me and said, ‘The announcer got more excited than anyone else, let’s call that start back.’ That was all the acceptance I needed. It stuck, and soon people were making merchandise with it.”
Over the years, Mike has worked under two different promoters. When the first promoter stepped away, Mike feared his time at the track was over. But Brad Whitfield gave him a chance, and the partnership has flourished. “I messaged Brad, ran to Yuma for a weekend assist, and was able to stick with him,” Mike says. “Four years later, I’m still here. My advice to Brad? Keep on hating the haters, they’re going to hate no matter what.”
While Mike has announced at several tracks, Central Arizona Raceway holds a special place in his heart. “The sheer number of cars, packed grandstands, and a genuine staff make it my favorite,” he says.
As for a dream event? Eldora Speedway. “That place has so much history. I’d love to announce there, and I’d probably leave my mark by writing ‘Mike on the Mic was here’ on a wall somewhere,” Mike laughs.
For those looking to follow in Mike’s footsteps, he has some sage advice: “Do what sounds right. You’re going to make mistakes. I still mispronounce names sometimes; Listen to constructive criticism. It’ll help you grow; Engage the fans. Get them involved before the show starts. It makes a huge difference; Be yourself and just send it. Find your style and own it.”
What does Mike love most about being an announcer? “I get to watch the races and do play-by-play as I see it. Being a fan first really helps. And the winner interviews? They’re the cherry on top.”
Mike Holland’s journey as an announcer is a testament to passion, hard work, and staying true to yourself. His voice and energy have made him an irreplaceable part in the announcers booth, and fans can’t wait to see (and hear) what’s next for “Mike on the Mic.”
