In The Tower and On The Radio: Insights from Heather Roath
The vibrations of the horsepower and the thrill of competition define the world of racing, but behind the scenes, there’s a different kind of excitement in the scoring tower. For Heather Roath, a veteran with 18 years of industry experience, the journey from the track to the booth has been filled with challenges, adrenaline, and unforgettable moments.
Starting in 2020, Roath stepped into a pivotal role alongside Brad Whitfield, after a few years of assisting at Canyon Speedway. “There’s a unique thrill and a different type of adrenaline when scoring and race directing,” Roath shared. “It’s an experience that’s hard to put into words but incredibly fulfilling.”
Of all the events she’s worked, Winter Nationals stands out as a favorite. “There’s something special about the energy and excitement of Winter Nationals,” said Roath. But her aspirations don’t stop there. “I’d love to score at the Clash on the Coast or Super Nationals someday. Those are dream events for me.”
Scoring races is not just about technical accuracy; it’s about fairness and focus, especially when the competitors include people close to your heart. For Roath, scoring her husband’s races brings its own unique challenges and rewards. “It’s pretty cool to be able to say ‘Congrats’ to him on the radio,” she laughed. “Until I have to make a call against him, that is!”
Despite the highs, the role comes with its frustrations; namely, the negativity that social media can bring to the sport. “I wish the negativity on social media would go away,” Roath admitted. “Though I know it will never happen, it’s something that weighs on the industry.”
Reflecting on the advice she’d offer aspiring scorers, Roath emphasized the importance of integrity. “Scoring is very tedious, and you have to be able to make decisions and stick to them. Always go by the rules, even if it makes friends or family mad. Being fair is essential.”
The view from the new scoring booth has only deepened her love for the job. “I love the perspective it gives me, everything is clear, and I feel connected to the action in a way that’s both exciting and precise,” Roath said.
Heather Roath’s journey is a reminder that racing isn’t just about the drivers on the track, it’s about the dedicated individuals behind the scenes who make it all possible. From Winter Nationals to dreams of future events, her story highlights the passion and commitment that fuel the racing world.
