Brett Rupp, a flag man carving his way through the Arizona Dirt Track Racing Community.
For Arizona native Brett Rupp, the roar of engines and the dirt flying off the track have been a way of life for over 32 years. Starting at Canyon Speedway in 1992, Brett’s journey into racing wasn’t just a career, it was the beginning of a lifelong passion. Whether it’s the wide open speeds of Cocopah Speedway or the tight, heart-pounding action at Deuce of Clubs Thunder Raceway, Brett has seen it all from his perch in the flagstand.
His love for racing truly ignited during his first solo race, flagging for the CRA Non-Wing Sprint Cars at Canyon Speedway. “That night changed everything for me,” Brett says. “That’s when I knew this is what I was meant to do.” Since then, his favorite moment has always been waving the checkered flag. “There’s nothing like it. You’re part of someone’s victory, and maybe even their first. It is also a moment of pride, knowing you’ve been part of a great night of racing.”
Brett’s journey hasn’t been without its challenges. When Canyon Speedway closed, he feared his days in the flagstand were over. But thanks to the support of Arizona promoter Brad Whitfield, he was given a second chance. “Brad gave me the opportunity to do what I love again,” Brett shares. “Because of him, I’ve flagged races I never dreamed I’d get to work; Western World, the Arizona IMCA Tour, Showdown, and more. I’ll always be grateful for the support he’s shown my family and I.”
Looking back on his career, Brett can’t help but smile. “I’ve been lucky to have moments I’ll never forget, but I’m always looking ahead to the next race,” he says. His dream? To flag at iconic tracks like Boone and Marshalltown Speedway. But wherever he goes, Brett’s commitment to the sport and its people never wavers.
For those who aspire to follow in his footsteps, Brett has one piece of advice: “Be passionate. Have patience. Some nights you’ll wish it would never end, and others you’ll want it to be over before they start. But no matter what, remember that you’re part of something bigger than yourself. Always thank the drivers and the fans, because without them, there’s no racing.”
Brett Rupp is more than just a flagman; he’s a cornerstone of Arizona’s racing community. His dedication, humor, and love for the sport have made him a beloved figure on and off the track. As Brett puts it, “I wish I was younger. I don’t want this ride to end.” And for Arizona’s racing fans, we hope it doesn’t anytime soon.
